About

consalsa.app is a daily word card site for Mexican Spanish — slang, expressions, interjections, and the kind of vocabulary that takes years to pick up in the wild.

Each word gets a comic-style card: bold typography, a bit of color, a touch of attitude. Click through for the etymology, example sentences, and a mini dialogue showing how it actually sounds in conversation.

Why this exists

Language apps teach you to order food and ask for directions. They don't teach you güey, ahorita, or why ¡aguas! has nothing to do with water.

The slang is where the culture lives. That's what this site is for.

Who it's for

If you're learning Spanish and want to sound like a person, not a textbook — this is for you. If you're traveling to Mexico City and want to follow actual conversations — same. Heritage speakers find it useful too; a lot of this vocabulary was passed down verbally and never showed up in a classroom.

No prior Spanish required for most words. Everything is explained in English, with phonetic pronunciation and real usage context. Beginners are welcome.

The words

All words are from Mexican Spanish — mostly Mexico City and central Mexico, the heart of everyday chilango speech. The metro, the taquería, the office WhatsApp thread at midnight. That's the register this site covers: informal Mexican Spanish vocabulary that you'd actually encounter in real life, not in a grammar exercise.

We flag words that are regionally specific, and note when something can come across as rude depending on tone or context.

How words are curated

Everything is researched and written by hand — not scraped, not generated. Each etymology is traced, each example is checked for actual usage, not just grammatical correctness. The goal is to explain not just what a word means, but why it sounds the way it does and where it came from.

The newsletter

One word per morning. No spam, no upsell, no fluff. Just the word, its story, and an example sentence worth remembering.
