Canceling well is a language skill and a manners skill. A Mexican cancellation needs warmth, timing, and a clear next move. Me salió algo is useful, but if you hide behind it every time, people notice.
The English instinct is to explain. A detailed reason feels like respect at home; here it does the opposite, because length is what makes an excuse sound assembled. Me salió algo is complete on its own, and the fact that nobody asks you what came up is the entire point of the phrase.12
The cancellation formula
Use three pieces: apology, reason, and either real reschedule or clean close.
| Phrase | What it does | Best read |
|---|---|---|
| Perdón | Repair | Especially if late |
| Me salió algo | Simple reason | Do not abuse it |
| No voy a poder | Clear cancel | Good backbone |
| ¿Te late moverlo? | Real reschedule | Use only if sincere |
| Lo dejamos para otro día | Soft delay | Can become vague |
The three parts are not optional extras. Drop the apology and it lands cold, drop the reason and it lands evasive, drop the reschedule and it lands like an ending. Nearly every cancellation that goes badly is missing exactly one of them.3
Notice that the reason in every workable version runs about three words. Me salió algo, traigo cero energía, se me juntó todo. The short one is not lazier than a full account - it is more believable, because nobody invents a detail they do not need.
- uno Perdón Sorry First word, not last. Everything after it lands softer.
- dos Me salió algo Something came up A complete reason in Mexican Spanish. Elaborating makes it sound less true, not more.
- tres ¿Lo movemos al jueves? Shall we move it to Thursday? A specific day. Without one, the cancellation reads as an ending.
With reschedule vs without reschedule
If you want to see them, name a new option. If you do not, do not offer fog. lo dejamos para otro día sounds kinder in the moment, but it becomes unkind if you know there will be no other day.
The reschedule is where a cancellation quietly turns into a rejection. Lo dejamos para otro día with no day attached is read as a soft ending - not rudely, just clearly. If you actually want to see the person, the sentence needs a weekday in it.4
-
Perdón, me salió algo y no voy a poder hoy.Sorry, something came up and I cannot today.
-
¿Te late moverlo al jueves? Are you up for moving it to Thursday?
-
Traigo cero energía. Mejor lo dejamos para otro día.I have zero energy. Better to leave it for another day.

The rain, work, and energy scripts
CDMX gives you real reasons: rain, traffic, work, exhaustion. Keep the reason short. The person does not need a medical dissertation; they need to know whether to leave the house.
Rain counts as a real reason here in a way that surprises visitors. An afternoon storm can add an hour to a crosstown trip, so cancelling for it is neither dramatic nor a pretext - it is a shared logistical fact, and it is accepted as one.5
Clean cancellation scripts
| Situation | Use this | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Perdón, se me complicó el trabajo | Work | Add new date if real |
| Traigo cero energía | Tired | Honest with friends/dates |
| Está lloviendo durísimo | Rain | Suggest indoor or move |
| No busco moverlo | No reschedule | Kind if true |
Swap in your own three-word reason and the script holds together.

Cancellations you can send as they are
Three short lines. Anything longer starts sounding like a defense.

Gracias por entender; te aviso con más tiempo la próxima. Thanks for understanding; I will tell you earlier next time.
Cancel early, reschedule specifically
The best cancellation does not make the other person chase clarity. It closes tonight and, if sincere, opens a specific next door.
Notice is the part nobody teaches. An apology sent in the morning costs almost nothing. The identical words at eight in the evening cost a great deal, because by then the other person has already crossed the city for you.6
