Antro, bar, cantina: the right word gets you the right night

These are not interchangeable. An antro is a nightclub - music loud enough to end conversation, a cover at the door, tables you pay for. A bar is a bar. A cantina is older, cheaper, food-forward and built for talking. Saying club marks you immediately, and disco in particular sounds about forty years out of date.

The door is where the money decisions happen. Cover is the entry charge, it varies by night, and it is often different for men and women. Taking a mesa usually means a minimum spend on bottles rather than simply a table, so ¿hay mesa? and ¿cuánto es el cover? are two separate questions with two very different answers.

Inside, the vocabulary shrinks because nobody can hear anything. ¿Bailas? is a complete invitation. ¿Dónde está el baño? gets pointed at rather than answered. And when you are finished, ya me dio sueño is the socially frictionless exit - blaming tiredness rather than the party is the polite version everywhere - with vámonos doing the rest.
