In Mexican Spanish a hangover is a cruda, and the word is doing something English does not.
Crudo is the ordinary adjective for raw — food that has not been cooked by any means.1 So ando crudo is not “I am hung over” in the neutral clinical sense. It is closer to I am undercooked. Not finished. Not yet fit to be served.
The noun and the adjective do different jobs
This is the bit that trips people up, and it is a one-line rule.
| Form | What it is | Example |
|---|---|---|
| la cruda | the noun — the hangover itself | traigo una cruda horrible |
| crudo / cruda | the adjective — how you are | ando crudo |
| crudo (of food) | raw, uncooked | el pollo está crudo |
Note the verb. Mexicans say ando crudo or traigo cruda far more than estoy crudo — andar and traer both frame it as something you are carrying around today rather than something you are.
The dictionary definition contains a detail most learners miss: a cruda is the general malaise some hours after drinking or after smoking to excess.2 It is not exclusively an alcohol word.

There is a second hangover, and it has its own name
La cruda moral is the emotional one — the guilt, shame and anxiety that arrive the next day about what you said or did.3 English has no single word for this. Mexican Spanish has had one for a long time.
It is genuinely distinct from the physical version. No headache, no nausea, just a low replay loop of the evening.3 And you do not need to have done anything wrong to get it; a normal party is enough.
- how you say ithow bad it is
- Ando medio crudo.I'm a bit rough.fine
- Traigo cruda.I'm hungover.real
- Traigo una cruda horrible.I'm badly hungover.write off the day
- Ando crudo y con cruda moral.Hungover, and ashamed.both at once
Naming it is most of the cure, and Mexicans use it lightly and often — no tomé tanto, pero traigo una cruda moral tremenda. Saying it out loud in a group chat reliably gets three people admitting the same thing. It is a joke and a small confession at once, which is exactly the register it lives in.
The morning-after phrase kit
- ¿cómo amanecieron?how did everyone wake up?
- muerto, traigo una cruda horribledead, I'm badly hungover
- jaja vamos por unos caldoshaha let's go get some caldo
¿Cómo amanecieron? is the fixed opener — literally how did you all dawn? The reply is expected to be dramatic. Saying you feel fine is technically allowed and slightly disappointing.
-
Hoy no me cuenten, ando crudo.Count me out today, I'm hungover.
-
¿Vamos por algo para la cruda?Shall we go get something for the hangover?
-
Me curo con caldo y me revivo.Broth fixes me and I come back to life.
The cures people actually name
The verb is curarse la cruda — to cure it — and everyone has a position.
| What people reach for | Why they say it works |
|---|---|
| menudo | the tripe soup; the traditional answer, especially on a Sunday |
| caldo de camarón | hot, salty, and sharp enough to wake you up |
| chilaquiles | the less committed version of the same idea |
| michelada | the hair of the dog, with lime and salt |
| un suero | electrolyte solution from any pharmacy |
Menudo is the interesting one linguistically, because the everyday adjective means small, fine or thin4 — the soup is named for how the tripe is cut, not for anything grand.
None of these is a medical claim and Mexicans do not present them as one. They are what you eat with other people the morning after, which is probably the active ingredient.

Cancelling softly
The most useful thing this vocabulary buys you is a graceful exit from plans.
Ando crudo is a complete and fully accepted excuse in Mexico. It is not embarrassing, it does not need dressing up, and nobody will push. Pair it with a forward offer — ando crudo, ¿lo dejamos para mañana? — and you have declined without closing anything.
What does not work is over-explaining. A long account of how much you drank turns a normal cancellation into a story nobody asked for, and it is the one thing that makes people wince.

Two hangovers, one word for the drink and one for the shame, and a metaphor that says you are simply not cooked yet. It is a much kinder way to describe the day after than anything English offers. A cold chela is how most of these evenings start,5 and it is also, according to a stubborn minority, how they end.
