curated, nobody paid

Mexican Spanish resources, checked

A curated directory of resources for Mexican Spanish - YouTube, podcasts, short-form, dictionaries, films, music and tools - each carrying a verdict on whether it teaches Mexican Spanish or neutral pan-Latin Spanish. Twenty-nine entries, checked in September 2026, with an honest negative on every one. Nothing here is an affiliate link and nobody paid to be listed.

Last checked 3 September 2026.

What we found, and it is not encouraging

Everything that genuinely teaches Mexico City register is dying, and everything that genuinely is Mexico City register teaches nothing.

That is not a framing device, it is the count. 9 of the 29 entries here carry the chilango badge. Exactly 2 of them set out to teach you anything, and both are broken: the only clearly Mexico City teaching podcast ended in June 2021, and the best Mexico City teaching channel on YouTube has around ten thousand subscribers and posts an advert for itself every six weeks.

The other 7 are films, a song, a city magazine and a subreddit. All unmistakably Mexico City, and not one of them will explain a word to you, because none of them was made for you. The middle of this market - where somebody tells you what a word does and who you can safely say it to - is close to empty.

How we judge these

Almost every list of Spanish resources treats "Spanish" as one thing. It is not, and the difference is the reason most of them waste your time. So every entry here carries one judgment before anything else: is this actually Mexican, or is it neutral Latin American Spanish with a Mexican flag on the thumbnail?

  • Chilango Mexico City register. The real thing, and the rarest badge on this page.
  • Mexican Mexican, but not from Mexico City. The entry says which part of the country.
  • Neutral LatAm Good, and deliberately not teaching you Mexico. Here for a job nothing Mexican does.
  • Spain Peninsular Spanish. Useful somewhere, actively unhelpful here.
  • Mixed More than one variety in the same feed, usually with nothing warning you which.

Nobody paid to be here. No affiliate links, no commission, no sponsored slots, and no way to buy a place or a position. Every outbound link is a plain link.

Every entry has a "skip it if". If we cannot say who a resource is wrong for, we do not understand it well enough to recommend it.

A blank beats a guess. Where we could not verify something - a creator's home city, whether a film has Spanish subtitles, how often a newsletter sends - the entry says so rather than filling the gap in.

Dates are load-bearing. This stuff rots. Channels go quiet, sites get hacked, good blogs drift to writing about somewhere else. Each entry carries the date we last looked, and anything that has stopped is labelled at the top rather than the bottom.

All 29, side by side

Sortable in your head rather than in the browser: the columns that matter are the two nobody else publishes. Tap a name to jump to the full entry.

YouTube channels

Five channels that form a ladder, from absolute beginner to two chilangos talking over each other.

The on-ramp

Dreaming Spanish

Graded video in Spanish only, from absolute beginner upward, with a documented method behind it.

Mixed Beginner / Intermediate Spanish only Free tier If you married into itIf you live there

No Mexican channel has solved the beginner problem. This one has, and that is the only reason it is here.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 614,000 subscribers, 805 videos, uploading roughly every other day (checked 3 Sep 2026) Visit ↗

Strangers on a CDMX street, at full speed, with a net

Easy Spanish

Street interviews with strangers, every video carrying Spanish and English subtitles at once.

Mexican Intermediate / Advanced Bilingual Free tier If you live thereIf you are here for the music

The lesson here is the interruption. Someone gets asked a question on the street, starts an answer, changes their mind halfway through, and finishes a different sentence - and you have dual subtitles underneath so you can actually catch what happened. No scripted channel gives you that, because scripts do not stammer.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 112 videos in the Mexico playlist; 642,000 subscribers channel-wide (checked 3 Sep 2026) Visit ↗

The one that is actually chilango

Speak Like a Mexican

The video arm of a CDMX Spanish school: numbered podcast episodes and vlogs shot in city markets and juice stands.

Chilango At risk Intermediate Bilingual Free tier If you live there

This is the strongest CDMX signal on YouTube, and it has ten thousand subscribers. Both halves of that sentence matter.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 10,300 subscribers, 180 videos, last upload roughly 2 months before 3 Sep 2026 Visit ↗

Native content you can actually finish

Backdoor

Scripted sketch comedy, three minutes at a time, built on Mexican social situations.

Mexican Advanced / Native content Spanish only Free If you are here for the musicIf you live there

A sketch is three minutes long, has one situation in it, and was written to be understood. That combination makes it the most forgiving native format there is - you can watch the same ninety seconds five times in the time it takes to fail at one podcast episode, and repetition is how slang actually sticks.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 5.77 million subscribers, 1,700 videos, 1.67 billion lifetime views (checked 3 Sep 2026) Visit ↗

The reference everyone assumes you have

Bully Magnets

Comic history documentaries, running since 2010, covering Mexican history alongside world history.

Mexican Advanced / Native content Spanish only Free tier If you married into itIf you are here for the music

The thing that leaves you outside a conversation at a Mexican dinner table is usually not a word. It is a reference. Somebody says something about the UNAM exam, or about 1994, and everyone laughs or winces, and you understood every syllable and none of the meaning.

Podcasts and audio

Four healthy suppliers doing near-identical work, and the one that gives away the thing the others sell.

The audio on-ramp

How to Spanish Podcast

Weekly conversation at a deliberately moderate pace, one topic at a time, plus a slow series for beginners.

Mexican Beginner / Intermediate Spanish only Free tier If you married into itIf you live there

This is the only Mexican audio with a real ladder underneath it. There are 41 slow comprehensible-input episodes for people who understand nothing yet, and 424 conversational ones for after that, and the two connect. Free structured beginner Mexican audio otherwise does not exist.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 424 episodes, latest around 31 Aug 2026; a separate 41-episode slow series for beginners Visit ↗

The one that hands you the key

Cheleando con Mextalki

Two Mexican guys over a beer on Mexican culture, history, crime and absurd laws, with the colloquialisms explained.

Mexican Intermediate / Advanced Spanish only Free tier If you live thereIf it is your family language

Every Mexican learner podcast gives away the audio. This is the one that gives away the transcript, and the transcript is the part that matters.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 182 episodes, biweekly, latest around 28 Aug 2026 Visit ↗

The chilango one, and it is over

Doorway To Mexico

Native dialogue between real speakers, followed by a breakdown of every colloquialism in it.

Chilango Archive Intermediate / Advanced Bilingual Free tier If you live there

It ended in June 2021. Read that first, because everything else about this entry depends on it.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 66 episodes, last one 1 Jun 2021 Visit ↗

The bridge, and the feelings vocabulary

Se Regalan Dudas

Twice-weekly conversations about mental health, relationships, sexuality and growing up, made for a Mexican audience.

Chilango Native content Spanish only Free If you married into itIf you live there

This is the easiest genuine native content in the directory, and the reason is boring and important: two people take turns. Nobody talks over anybody, there is one idea per episode, and the pace is deliberate. If native audio has been a wall, this is the low bit of it.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 692 episodes, Tuesdays and Thursdays, latest 2 Sep 2026 Visit ↗

The study tool

Radio Ambulante

Long-form narrative journalism from across Latin America, one story per episode, with a full transcript for every one.

Neutral LatAm Intermediate / Advanced Spanish only Free If you live thereIf you are here for the music

Not one Mexican show in this entire research had a transcript of any kind. Radio Ambulante publishes a Spanish transcript and an English translation for every episode, free, and has done for years.

HowtoSpanish (Erika Sanz)

Reels teaching everyday Mexican Spanish with English translations, running since 2016.

The easiest native audio, and the control sample

Cocinero en Proceso

Traditional Mexican cooking over wood fire in clay pots, narrated slowly while he works.

Mexican Intermediate / Advanced Spanish only Free If you live thereIf you are here for the music

Slow narration over an action you can see is the easiest native audio that exists. You are never guessing what a word refers to, because the thing is in his hands. You can follow this a whole level below where you could follow a conversation.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 About 1.8 million on Instagram and over 2 million on TikTok, roughly 5 million across platforms Visit ↗

In-law Spanish

A la Cocina con Jacobina

Mexican home cooking and household tips, from getting labels off jars to what goes in a lunchbox.

Mexican Intermediate Spanish only Free If you married into it

There is a whole register nobody teaches because it is not exciting: the Spanish of running a house. What you call the thing you soak the beans in, how you tell someone to move the chair, the way an older woman says no to a child. If you married into a Mexican family, this is most of what you actually hear.

Dictionaries and reference

Not five dictionaries to use. The chain of evidence behind a single claim, in the order we reach for it.

Where the pragmatics question gets answered, in English

WordReference

Bilingual dictionaries, and twenty years of archived forums where native speakers argue out usage questions.

Mixed Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced Bilingual Free If you married into itIf you live there

Every dictionary can tell you what a word means. None of them can tell you whether it will land badly at your mother-in-law's table, because that is not a fact about the language, it is a fact about people.

Same word, different country, different meaning

Jergas de habla hispana

A slang dictionary of the whole Spanish-speaking world, browsable country by country.

Mixed Intermediate Spanish only Free If you live thereIf you are here for the music

The trap this fixes is specific. You learned Spanish in Madrid or Buenos Aires or a classroom, you moved to Mexico, and a word you have used confidently for years now means something you did not intend.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 Twenty-nine years old and still being edited - the footer read 25 August 2026 when we checked Visit ↗

The one that settles the argument

Diccionario del Español de México

The reference dictionary of Mexican Spanish, built from a corpus of Mexican Spanish rather than adapted from a Spain dictionary.

Mexican Advanced / Native content Spanish only Free If you live thereIf you married into it

When two people disagree about what a Mexican word means, this is the thing that ends it. It is corpus-derived, it carries citations, and it was made in Mexico about Mexico.

Last checked 3 Sept 2026 Around 33,000 entries and over 75,000 senses, second edition 2019 Visit ↗

The dichos, from the right country

Refranero Mexicano

A browsable database of Mexican proverbs, published by the Mexican language academy.

Mexican Intermediate / Advanced Spanish only Free If you married into itIf it is your family language

Dichos are the dinner table. They are the thing an abuela says that makes everyone at once laugh and look at each other, and they are the single most reliable way to be the only person in the room who did not get it.

The one that kills a bad origin story

Gran Diccionario Náhuatl

One search across roughly twenty-two historical Nahuatl dictionaries at once, including Molina's from 1571.

Mexican Advanced / Native content Spanish only Free If it is your family languageIf you are here for the music

There is an entire industry of beautiful Nahuatl etymologies for Mexican words, and a lot of them are invented. The famous one is apapachar, endlessly repeated as caress with the soul, which is lovely and is not what the sources say.

TV, film and music

Register density beats prestige. Three of these five are free, and no listicle mentions it.

The anchor - real CDMX speech with subtitles that match it

Una película de policías

Two actors train as Mexico City police, then lip-sync the recorded testimony of two real officers.

Chilango Advanced Spanish only Paid If you live there

This is the only thing in the directory that gives you unrehearsed Mexico City speech at length with authored Spanish subtitles under it. Everything else makes you pick one or the other.

The watchable one, and the fresa to naco axis

Nosotros los Nobles

A rich Mexico City father fakes bankruptcy to force his three useless adult children into jobs.

Chilango Intermediate / Advanced Spanish only Paid If you live thereIf you married into it

Here is the register lesson, in a comedy you will actually finish. The same handful of words come out of very different mouths in this film, and they do not mean the same thing each time.

The free one, where the word is the subject

Güeros

A black-and-white road movie across Mexico City during the 1999 UNAM student strike.

Chilango Advanced Spanish only Free with a library card If you live thereIf you are here for the music

This site has a page about the word güero. This is a hundred and six minutes about what the word does to people, which is a different and better thing.

The three-minute vocabulary exam

Chilanga Banda

Three minutes in which almost every word is Mexico City street caló, with a heavy preference for words starting in ch.

Chilango Advanced / Native content Spanish only Free If you are here for the musicIf you live there

Forty-odd pieces of chilango slang in one three-minute song, already annotated all over the Spanish-language internet, and nearly every one of them is a word this site would write a page about. Nothing else in this category converts into study material that directly.

The present tense

Corridos tumbados

The corrido narrative form crossed with trap production, out of Sinaloa, Sonora and Jalisco.

Mexican Intermediate Spanish only Free If you married into itIf it is your family language

Everything else in this category is from between 2001 and 2021. This is what Mexicans in their twenties and thirties are actually listening to right now, and if you have a Mexican partner it is already playing in the car whether or not anyone put it on a list for you.

Hear it said by a Mexican, not by a robot

Forvo

A pronunciation dictionary recorded by volunteers, where every recording is tagged with the speaker's country.

Mixed Beginner / Intermediate / Advanced Spanish only Free tier If it is your family languageIf you live there

Text-to-speech will give you a word. It will not give you the Mexican version of the word, and for a lot of what this site covers the Mexican version is the entire point - how güey collapses toward wey in ordinary speech, what mande actually sounds like.

Turn what you are already watching into study material

Language Reactor

A Chrome extension putting dual subtitles, a pop-up dictionary and phrase-level replay inside Netflix and YouTube.

Neutral LatAm Intermediate / Advanced Bilingual Free tier If you live thereIf you are here for the music

This is the pick that makes the rest of the watch list usable rather than aspirational. Everything we recommend in TV and film assumes you can stop, back up ten seconds, read the line in both languages and go again. Left to itself, Netflix does not let you do that.

What does not exist

Four things we went looking for and could not find. If you know of one, we would genuinely like to be wrong about it.

  • A chilango dictionary. There is no lookup resource scoped to Mexico City. The closest thing is a Colegio de México interview corpus, licensed for academic linguistics only, whose newest volume is from 2015 - so it documents the parents of today's young chilangos.
  • A maintained Mexican Spanish flashcard deck. We searched AnkiWeb, GitHub and the open web. What exists is one deck of 51 cards with no audio and a single rating, plus an abandoned mirror last touched in 2021.
  • Anything built for queer Mexican Spanish. Across every category here, nothing is aimed at Zona Rosa vocabulary, app and bar signals, or flirting and setting boundaries in Mexican Spanish. Not one resource.
  • Anyone teaching consequence. Plenty of people will teach you sixty slang words. Almost nobody will tell you which of them survives being said in front of your girlfriend's father, which is the question that actually costs you something.

Common questions

What is the best resource for learning Mexican Spanish?

There is no single one, and any page that names one is selling something. What there is: a beginner on-ramp that is not Mexican and should be left behind, a small number of genuinely Mexican teaching resources, and a large amount of native Mexican content that teaches nothing and explains nothing but is where the language actually lives. Most people need one from each of those three groups, in that order.

Is Mexican Spanish different enough to need its own resources?

Yes, and the gap is mostly register rather than vocabulary. A pan-Latin American course teaches you words that are correct everywhere and tone that is calibrated nowhere, so you end up technically fluent and unable to tell whether what you just said was friendly or insulting. That judgment is regional, and it is the thing generic Spanish resources structurally cannot give you.

Do you get paid for these recommendations?

No. No affiliate links, no commission, no sponsored placements, and no way to buy a listing or a position. Every outbound link on this page is a plain link. If that ever changes it will say so on the page rather than in a disclosure nobody reads.

Is there a good chilango Spanish resource?

Barely, and that is the most useful thing this directory found. The only clearly chilango teaching podcast ended in 2021. The only Mexico City teaching channel on YouTube has around ten thousand subscribers and posts every six weeks. There is no chilango dictionary at all. What is genuinely Mexico City - the comedy, the sketch channels, the city subreddit - explains nothing, because it was never made for learners.

How often is this list updated?

Each entry carries the date it was last verified, and anything dormant or dead is labelled at the top of its entry instead of quietly left in. The whole directory was last gone through on 3 September 2026. This category of thing rots quickly, so corrections are genuinely welcome.
