Our take

A customized, mostly one-on-one school in Oaxaca's Centro that also runs a campus in Puerto Escondido, which is the thing worth knowing: the standard Oaxaca trip goes city first, coast second, and this is the only school in this directory that covers both. Lessons run Monday to Friday between 9am and 7pm with evenings and weekends on request, and can happen at the school, in a café, in a park or where you are staying. Cultural trips to Monte Albán, Zaachila and the markets come with it. Fees are not published.

How we know: Research-based, from the school's own site and its Google Maps listing as of June 7, 2026. The claims about student recommendations and TripAdvisor awards below are the school's own, repeated as such rather than verified. No fees are published, so none are quoted. We have not sat in a class.

The full story

The school has two campuses: this one in Oaxaca's Centro, and a second on the coast at Puerto Escondido. If your itinerary covers both - and the state's two best-known destinations are a common pairing - that is the difference between stopping lessons when you move and keeping the same school, the same level and the same materials across the trip. Puerto Escondido has three schools of its own in this directory; what none of them can do is pick you up mid-course from Oaxaca city.

The teaching is built around you rather than a cohort. It is one-on-one by default, with special group programs, an online option and classes for kids, and the school will hold a lesson at its Matamoros address, in a café, in a park or at your accommodation. Hours run Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, with evenings and weekends available on request - the widest window of any Oaxaca school listed here, though it is private lessons arranged around you rather than a timetabled evening class. The practical consequence is that a lesson can move when your week does. Culture is folded in as trips rather than classroom time: Monte Albán, Zaachila, the markets, cooking, a railway outing.

Worth settling before you book. The school advertises that 98% of students recommend it and that it has held a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence since 2021; both are its own claims, and we have not checked either, so weigh them accordingly next to the Google average, which is independent. And no prices appear on the site - so if you are comparing Oaxaca schools on cost, this one takes an email, while La Guarida, the one Oaxaca school listed here that publishes its full rates, does not.

One school across Oaxaca city and Puerto Escondido - customized one-on-one lessons that carry over when you move to the coast instead of ending when you leave.

FAQ

Can I study in both Oaxaca and Puerto Escondido?

That is the point of this listing. The school runs a campus in each - the coast one is on Puebla in Brisas de Zicatela - so a trip that starts in the Centro and moves to the coast keeps the same school, level and materials instead of starting over. If you are only going to the coast, the three Puerto Escondido schools listed here are the ones to compare.

Are the classes one-on-one?

Mostly. The default is customized one-on-one lessons, with special group programs, an online option and classes for children also offered. If you specifically want a group cohort, ask what is running during your dates.

Where do lessons take place?

At the school on Matamoros, or in a café, a park, or where you are staying. Hours run Monday to Friday from 9am to 7pm, with evenings and weekends on request.

What does it cost?

The school does not publish fees. You will need to email for a quote - and if comparing beforehand matters, La Guarida is the one Oaxaca school listed here that publishes its own.

Is the 98% recommendation figure verified?

Not by us. That figure and the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence are both the school's own claims, repeated here as claims. The Google average of 4.9 across 91 reviews is the independent number on this page.

What Spanish will you actually learn at Spanish Immersion School?

Central Mexican Spanish spoken more slowly, in the state with the second-highest share of people living in indigenous households in Mexico.

Mexico's 2020 census puts 43.9 percent of Oaxaca's population in indigenous households, second only to Yucatán, and Zapotec and Mixtec are living languages here rather than heritage ones. You will not learn them in a Spanish class, but you will hear the contact: place names, food words, and a set of everyday borrowings that a course book from Madrid has never heard of. The food vocabulary alone - tlayuda, chapulines, mezcal, mole in its several colors - is a working glossary you will use daily.

Learners consistently report that Oaxaca is easier to practice in than CDMX, and the plainest reason is supply and demand: fewer people will switch to English on you, and the city is small enough to walk. What you give up is the volume of slang. Chilango is the register the rest of the country quotes; Oaxaca will teach you to be understood, and it will not teach you to sound like the internet.

That is the city, not the classroom. We have not sat in a class at Spanish Immersion School, so this is what the Spanish around it sounds like rather than a claim about how it is taught - and the words below are ours, from the dictionary this directory is a side effect of.
