Our take
CEPE is UNAM's Spanish program for foreigners, and it is the institutional option in this directory. The autumn in-person intensive is MXN 17,360 for 126 hours - about MXN 138 an hour, well under any per-hour rate we have been able to confirm elsewhere in the city. Each level bundles three courses: the language class, a practice class, and a Mexican history, art or literature class you choose between. The textbook and a coupon for part of the SIELE exam are included. In exchange you accept the university's calendar instead of your own.
How we know: Research-based, from CEPE's own course pages and enrollment system. Fees, hours, levels and session dates below are quoted from the autumn 2026 intensive listing as published in September 2026, and university fees change by session - check the current course page before you count on the number. CEPE is not in our Google Maps dataset, so this listing carries no star rating.
The full story
CEPE is not a language school in the sense the rest of this list means it. It is a department of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México that has been teaching Spanish to foreigners for decades, and enrolling is a university process, because that is what it is. Levels run from Iniciación through Español 8, so absolute beginners are properly catered for, and you are placed by a real test on a published date rather than by a chat about how you feel your Spanish is going.
The structure is more generous than the price suggests. Every level packages three courses: the language class, a practice class aimed at whichever skill your level needs, and a culture class where you pick between Mexican history, art and literature. The MXN 17,360 intensive fee covers enrollment, the Dicho y hecho textbook, and a coupon for the SIELE S1 module, the reading and listening half of the certification. CEPE administers SIELE and EXELEAA on site, so the certificate route is open if you need one for a job or a visa. At 126 hours the per-hour figure works out near MXN 138. The two private rates we have confirmed in this city, at the schools listed here, both start around MXN 500.
Then there is the load, and nobody advertises it. 126 hours across seven weeks is roughly eighteen hours a week, on a fixed university timetable you do not get to move. That is close to a part-time job, and it is the reason this is a poor fit for anyone who came to Mexico City to work remotely and study on the side. The session dates are fixed too - the autumn intensive runs October 21 to December 8, 2026 - so landing mid-session means waiting for the next one, and the placement tests happen on set days you have to hit. Enrollment is a university process rather than a form and a card.
The national university’s Spanish program for foreigners: the best hours-per-peso we can verify in Mexico City, if your trip is long enough to fit a real academic session around.

FAQ
What does CEPE cost?
The autumn 2026 in-person intensive is listed at MXN 17,360 for 126 hours, including enrollment, the Dicho y hecho textbook and a SIELE S1 coupon. Fees vary by session and format, so check the current course page rather than relying on this figure.
How many hours a week is it?
The intensive is 126 hours over about seven weeks, so roughly eighteen hours a week on a fixed timetable. Plan for it the way you would plan for a part-time job, not an evening class.
Can I start as a complete beginner?
Yes. Levels begin at Iniciación and run through Español 8, and you are assigned one by a placement test rather than by self-assessment. The tests run on published dates, in person and online, in the weeks before each session.
Is there an online option?
Yes. CEPE runs virtual Spanish courses at 32 and 75 hours, Saturday practice classes, and monthly practice courses, alongside the in-person and hybrid tracks.
Do they run other campuses?
Ciudad Universitaria is the main one, and there are CEPE branches in Polanco and in Taxco. If getting down to the south of the city every day is the sticking point, ask what Polanco is running that session.
Will I get a certificate?
CEPE administers the SIELE and EXELEAA exams on site, and the intensive fee covers a coupon for the SIELE S1 module. Course completion and formal certification are separate things - if you need the certificate for a job or a visa, say so at enrollment.
What Spanish will you actually learn at CEPE UNAM?
Chilango Spanish - the register most of this site is written in, and the one Mexican film, television and music mostly export.
Practically, that means you will come out using the words a chilango uses without thinking: güey as punctuation rather than an insult, neta to check whether someone is serious, no manches when they were not. You will also meet the diminutive doing work that no textbook prepares you for, where ahorita can mean now, in an hour, or never, and the difference is carried entirely by tone.
It travels better than any other Mexican register. Because it is what the country broadcasts, a chilango accent is understood everywhere in Mexico and read as neutral in most of Latin America. The trade-off is that CDMX is the easiest place in the country to never need Spanish at all - Roma and Condesa will happily answer you in English - so the neighborhood you sleep in matters nearly as much as the school you pick.
That is the city, not the classroom. We have not sat in a class at CEPE UNAM, so this is what the Spanish around it sounds like rather than a claim about how it is taught - and the words below are ours, from the dictionary this directory is a side effect of.
