Uber and DiDi pickup Spanish for CDMX gates and corners

Most ride-app Spanish is not fancy. It is estoy afuera, por aquí está bien, and explaining which impossible corner you are on.

Use This First

  • Memorize estoy afuera, estoy en la esquina, voy bajando, and por aquí está bien.
  • Use ya voy or voy bajando when the driver arrives before you do.
  • Aguas is useful for warnings: wrong gate, traffic, or a hard-to-see entrance.

Your pin is probably wrong, and the driver already knows it

GPS in Mexico City fails in a specific way. On the big diagonal avenues and inside the older colonias the pin lands on the wrong side of a divided road, or on a street name that repeats three neighbourhoods over. The driver is not lost because your Spanish is bad. They are lost because the app sent them somewhere plausible and wrong.

So the useful move is not a better sentence, it is a better landmark. Estoy afuera del OXXO. En la esquina de Orizaba y Álvaro Obregón. Frente al portón negro. Cross streets are how addresses actually work in conversation here - people give them before they give a number. Adding what you are wearing sounds odd in English and is completely standard in Spanish.

The other half is the countdown. Voy bajando means you are on your way down and buys about two minutes. Ya casi is vaguer and used freely. Drivers wait a few minutes before the app starts charging, so a quick message is not politeness - it is the thing that stops the ride being cancelled.

What do you text an Uber driver in Mexico City?

A landmark rather than an address. Estoy afuera del OXXO, or en la esquina de Orizaba y Álvaro Obregón. Adding what you are wearing is standard here and makes the pickup much faster.

What does voy bajando mean?

I am on my way down. It is the standard message when the driver has arrived and you are still inside, and it buys a couple of minutes without the ride being cancelled.

Is Uber or DiDi better in CDMX?
