Quick Answer
Mándame la ubicación means drop me the pin in Mexican Spanish. The map location has largely replaced the written address for meeting people, because Mexican addresses need a street, a number, a colonia and often an alcaldía. Mándame tu ubi is the clipped everyday form.
- Mándame la ubicación means send me the pin - the map location rather than the written address.
- Mándame tu ubi is the clipped form, and it is what people actually type.
- Ubicación en tiempo real is live location - used first for safety, and second for finding out whether somebody has really left.
What it means
Send me the point on the map. Not the street, not the number - the pin, which arrives as a message and opens in whatever maps app the other person has.
It is also how a plan becomes real. A conversation about meeting somewhere stays hypothetical until somebody sends a location, and after that it is happening.
What mándame la ubicación might actually mean

How Mexicans use it
Between friends it closes the planning. Somebody names a place, somebody else says mándame la ubicación, and everything after that is logistics rather than negotiation.
Two older habits survive alongside it and both are worth having. ¿Entre qué calles? asks for the cross-streets, and it is the direct ancestor of the pin. Referencias are landmarks - frente al Oxxo, junto a la farmacia, a media cuadra del parque - and they are how a delivery actually finds you when the pin lands on the wrong side of a building.
With a driver it is the standard fix. A taxi or a delivery that has called twice does not want the address repeated - pásame la ubicación por WhatsApp is what solves it, and everybody knows that.
The live version has two jobs and the bigger one is safety. Compárteme tu ubicación is what somebody says when a friend gets into a taxi at night, and family groups often leave location on permanently. Avísame cuando llegues is the same instinct in words. The punctuality use - checking whether somebody has actually left - is real but it is the smaller half.
Te mando la ubicación is a promise rather than an action, and worth hearing as such. It means the details are coming later, so a plan that ends on that sentence is not yet fixed.
How to pin down mándame la ubicación
- ¿Me mandas la ubicación?Can you send me the pin?
The whole tool, in one message. Nothing here reads as doubting anybody.
- ¿Me compartes tu ubicación en tiempo real? Can you share your live location?
The version that answers whether they have left. Normal between friends.
- ¿Es el de Escandón o el otro?Is it the Escandón one or the other one?
For places with branches. El lugar de siempre is not always the same usual place.
- ¿Entre qué calles?What are the cross-streets?
The older tool and still the fastest in conversation. ¿Me das una referencia? gets you a landmark instead.
- Nada más para no dar vueltas.Just so I don't end up circling.
Gives them a reason to be precise that has nothing to do with doubting them.

Mini dialogue
Common mistake
Dictating an address when somebody asked for a pin. It is slower, it is more error-prone, and in a city where street names repeat it can send somebody to the wrong colonia entirely.
Treating a request for live location as suspicion. Between friends it is usually about saving four messages, or about somebody wanting to know you got home - not about checking up on you. Saying no to it is equally unremarkable, so neither asking nor declining is worth reading into.
Sending it to somebody you do not know. This is ordinary awareness in Mexico rather than paranoia: not a marketplace buyer, not an unknown number, and least of all the live version. The pin is a convenience among people you have met.
Don't sound gringo
the pin has largely replaced the written address here, and for a good reason: addresses in mexico are genuinely hard.
You need the street, the number, the colonia and often the alcaldía; house numbering is not always sequential, and two colonias in the same city can share a street name. So nobody dictates an address any more - they send a location.
Learn the clipped form, mándame tu ubi, because that is what people actually type.
And learn ubicación en tiempo real - live location - which is the move that ends every argument about whether somebody has actually left.
Where you'll hear it
- A plan that existed for a week and became real the moment somebody dropped a pin
- A driver who has called twice and only needs one thing, and it is not the street name
- A delivery that has been circling the block because the numbering skips from 42 to 58
- A live location shared at nine that has not moved by nine twenty

FAQ
What does mándame la ubicación mean?
Send me the pin - the map location rather than the written address. It is what people ask for instead of a street and number.
What does mándame tu ubi mean?
The same thing, clipped. Ubi is the everyday short form of ubicación and it is what people actually type.
Why do Mexicans send a pin instead of an address?
Because addresses here need a street, a number, a colonia and often an alcaldía, street names repeat across a city, and numbering is not always sequential. A pin skips all of it.
What is ubicación en tiempo real?
Live location, shared for a period rather than sent as one point. It is the polite way to find out whether somebody has actually left, and asking a friend for it is normal.
Is it rude to ask for live location?
Between friends, no. It reads as saving four messages rather than as checking up on anybody. Refusing it is the thing that looks odd.
What does te mando la ubicación mean?
I'll send you the location - which is a promise rather than an action. A plan that ends on that sentence is not fixed yet.
What is a referencia?
A landmark. ¿Me das una referencia? gets you frente al Oxxo, junto a la farmacia, a media cuadra del parque - and that is what actually finds you when a pin lands on the wrong side of a building.
Should I send my location to anybody who asks?
No, and Mexicans are matter-of-fact about this. Not a marketplace buyer, not an unknown number, and least of all live location. It is a convenience among people you have met.
When do I still need a dirección?
Anything official or written - a delivery form, a contract, a bank. For meeting a person, the pin has taken over.
